Abdominoplasty (Tummy Tuck)

An abdominoplasty, commonly known as a tummy tuck, is a surgical procedure that removes excess skin and fat from the abdomen and tightens weakened or separated abdominal muscles.

It is designed to restore a firmer, smoother abdominal profile — often following pregnancy, significant weight loss, or ageing.

While it enhances body contour, abdominoplasty is not a substitute for diet or exercise. It is most beneficial for patients who have achieved a stable weight but still struggle with loose, sagging abdominal tissue or muscle separation (rectus diastasis).

The Surgical Process

At Circle of Care, abdominoplasty is performed by Dr Mark Boccola, Bariatric surgeon, at Lakeview Private Hospital, Norwest.

The procedure is performed under general anaesthetic and typically takes 3–4 hours, depending on the extent of correction required.

The key steps include:

  1. Incision: A low horizontal incision is made just above the pubic area; a second incision may be made around the navel.
  2. Muscle Repair: The abdominal muscles are tightened to correct separation and strengthen the core.
  3. Skin and Fat Removal: Excess skin and fatty tissue are removed to achieve a flatter contour.
  4. Skin Repositioning: The remaining skin is gently pulled down, and the incision is closed with sutures.

Patients generally stay 1–3 nights in hospital and wear a supportive compression garment during recovery. Light activities can usually resume within 2–3 weeks, with full recovery expected after 6–8 weeks.

Medicare and Private Health Fund Rebates

In some medically indicated cases, abdominoplasty may qualify for a Medicare rebate under MBS item 30177.

This applies when the procedure is required to treat problems resulting from significant weight loss, such as:

  • Recurrent skin irritation, infections, or rashes beneath skin folds
  • Difficulty with hygiene or movement due to excess skin

If you meet these criteria and have appropriate private hospital cover, your health fund may contribute toward:

  • Hospital and theatre fees
  • Anaesthetist fees
  • A portion of your surgeon’s fees

If you do not meet Medicare criteria, the procedure will be classified as cosmetic and will not attract a rebate.

Do I Need a GP Referral?

A GP referral is required if you wish to claim Medicare or private health fund rebates.
Your GP referral also ensures Dr Boccola has your relevant medical history and can determine if you meet the MBS criteria for reconstructive abdominoplasty.

If you are considering surgery for cosmetic reasons only, a referral is not mandatory, but it is still encouraged for coordinated care.

Who Are Ideal Candidates?

You may be suitable for abdominoplasty if you:

  • Have loose or sagging abdominal skin following pregnancy or major weight loss
  • Experience muscle separation (rectus diastasis)
  • Suffer from skin irritation or infections under abdominal folds
  • Are in good overall health and maintain a stable weight
  • Have realistic expectations about the results

Costs and Out-of-Pocket Fees

Every abdominoplasty is tailored to the individual, so costs vary based on your surgical needs, hospital stay, and eligibility for rebates.

Before proceeding, you will receive a comprehensive written quote outlining:

  • Dr Boccola’s surgical fees
  • Anaesthetist fees
  • Hospital and theatre costs
  • Any applicable Medicare or health fund rebates:
    • Medicare-eligible abdominoplasty (MBS 30177): Out-of-pocket costs may be substantially reduced if you have the appropriate private health cover

Please call for an appointment to discuss your eligibility with your individual private health fund cover.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

  1. How long does recovery take?
Most patients return to light duties after 2–3 weeks and resume full exercise by 6–8 weeks post-surgery.
  2. Will I have a scar?
Yes. The incision is placed low across the abdomen, allowing it to be hidden beneath most underwear or swimwear. Scars generally fade over 12–18 months.
  3. Can stretch marks be removed?
Stretch marks on the lower abdomen may be removed or improved if they fall within the skin that is excised.
  4. Is the procedure covered by Medicare or private health funds?
Yes — but only when strict MBS 30177 criteria are met. Your consultation with Dr Boccola will determine your eligibility.
  5. What results can I expect?
Patients typically achieve a flatter, firmer abdomen and a more defined waistline. Final results are visible around 3–6 months post-surgery once swelling subsides.
