Aussie mums incorrectly guess the weight of their toddlers

Australian researcher Rebecca Byrne asked 276 mums to rank their 12-16 month old as underweight, normal weight or over weight. 27 mums said their child was underweight with only 1 actually being found to be too thin.

11 children were identified as overweight by their mums with 88 of the 276 toddlers actually being overweight.

Rapid early weight gain before two years of age is associated with a 2-3 fold increase in risk of being overweight later in life.

It is a situation that many parents and their GP’s are not willing to discuss but it doesn’t seem the situation is going to go away any time soon.

20 years ago, it was more likely that kids would grow out of their weight and less kids were overweight, but with less activity, busy parents and more food purchased away from home, it is now less likely to be the case.
