The Day of Surgery

  • Admission to hospital on the morning of surgery
  • Hospitals: surgery is performed at The Hills Private Hospital, Strathfield Private Hospital and Prince of Wales Private Hospital.
  • Fasting from midnight the night before surgery
  • Meet the anaesthetist, surgeon, assistant surgeon and nursing staff
  • Operation: The gastric banding operation takes about 75-90 minutes.
  • Recovery: on waking in the recovery ward, most patients have an iv drip, and drains are not usually required
  • Analgesia is given intra-operatively and in recovery if required.
  • Nil by mouth on day of operation
  • Monitoring by nursing staff in ward, some patients may require high dependency care if suffering from sleep apnoea.
