Sleeve Gastrectomy

How does it work?

Sleeve gastrectomy is a stomach reduction operation which involves removing the lateral 2/3rds of the stomach with a stapling device. What remains is a small tube of stomach of about 200ml rather that the usual large stomach sack. The procedure can be done with keyhole surgery, but it is not reversible.

What are the risks?

  • Not adjustable
  • Leakage along the stapling lines

What are the benefits?

  • No malabsorption
  • Very effective weight loss
  • Can be considered for failed gastric banding
