Intragastric Balloon

How does it work?

The intragastric balloon consists of a silicone balloon which is introduced through the mouth into the stomach where it is filled with saline. The balloon partially fills the stomach and patients report that they have a feeling of fullness. The procedure is done without the need for surgery and will usually take about 20-30 minutes. The intragastric balloon is used in conjunction with a supervised diet.

The intragastric balloon can only be used for 6 months and then removed in the same way it was placed.

What are the risks?

  • The balloon may self deflate
  • Weight regain once the balloon is removed
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Bowel obstruction

What are the benefits?

  • Non surgical
  • Helps people with lower BMI range
  • To reduce weight prior to gastric banding in super obese patients (BMI >60).
  • Temporary use for weight loss in severely obese patient who are not candidates for obesity surgery.
