Glossary Of Terms


Adipose

Fatty, related to fat

Adjustment

A procedure where saline is added or removed from the gastric band to control the restriction of the band on the stomach.

Bariatric

A branch of medicine that deals with obesity. From Greek Origin ‘Baros’ meaning weight and ‘iatrikos’ meaning the art of healing

Barium Swallow

An x-ray test using radio-opaque liquid to assess the gastro-intestinal tract

Body Mass Index (BMI)

Your BMI estimates how much you should weight, based on your height. The calculation is: Weight in kgs, divided by your (height in meters)².

Co-morbid/Co-morbidity

Illnesses or disabling conditions related to morbid obesity or obesity related health conditions.

Fluoroscopy

A video image like an x-ray which shows a real time image of the internal organs. This is used with some band adjustments.

GORD

Gastro-oesophageal reflux disorder

How long will the band last?

There is no answer to this question. There had been similar products in use in excess of ten years and show no signs of failure. However we do expect that down the track there will be failure of the adjusting balloon in particular and if this should occur, the band would need to be replaced. This will be determined as necessary

Morbid Obesity

Anyone with a Body Mass Index ≥40

Obesity

Obesity is a term used to describe body weight that is much greater than what is considered healthy. A Body Mass Index of 30 – 40 is considered in the obese range.

Super Obese

Anyone with a Body Mass Index ≥ 50

Type 2 Diabetes

Most common form of diabetes that causes an abnormally high level of sugar, or glucose, to build up in the blood.
